What is the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Test?

The Private Pilot Knowledge Test (also called the “PPL written exam” or “FAA written test”) is a required step toward earning your Private Pilot Certificate. The FAA requires all student pilots to pass this knowledge test before they can take their practical checkride.

The exam covers 12 knowledge areas defined by the FAA Airman Certification Standards (ACS), from aerodynamics and weather to navigation and regulations. You'll have 120 minutes to answer 60 multiple-choice questions, and you need a score of 70% or higher to pass.

Most student pilots find that the written exam is challenging — not because the questions are trick questions, but because the breadth of knowledge required is substantial. Topics range from reading aviation weather charts to calculating weight and balance to understanding federal aviation regulations.
